Stations

Station 1 “Assonet Village”

Station 1 is located at 3 Elm Street in the Assonet Village section of town. Station 1 was opened in 1948 and was the town’s first purpose-built fire station. Fire apparatus in Assonet were kept at the town hall prior to this. Station 1 is an unstaffed “call” station and is manned on an as-needed basis with off-duty and on-call firefighters. Station 1 houses one engine and one squad/forestry vehicle.

Station 1 Fleet

Engine 1 is a 2021 KME Severe Service pumper. Engine 1 is the primary firefighting vehicle out of Station 1 and responds first to all fire and rescue calls in the Assonet Village. Engine 1 is equipped with a Hale 1500 gallon per minute pump and a 1,000 gallon water tank. Engine 1 also carries the Jaws of Life and various medical equipment for motor vehicle accidents.

Squad 1 is a 2012 Ford F-550/Fouts Brothers squad/forestry vehicle. Squad 1 serves as a multi-purpose quick response vehicle and is first due out of Station 1 for medical emergencies and brush fires. It responds behind Engine 1 for all other calls. Squad 1 is also used for special details and to tow department boats and trailers. Squad 1 is equipped with a Darley 370 gallon per minute pump and a 300 gallon water tank. It also carries various medical equipment and is defibrillator-equipped. This vehicle was purchased with funding from a 2011 FEMA Assistance to Firefighter’s Grant.

Marine 1 is a 1974 Boston Whaler that is trailered to all water related incidents in town.

Station 2 “Furnace Village”

Station 2 is located at 157 County Road in the East Freetown section of town. Station 2 began life in 1926 as a car dealership and repair garage. The town began storing fire apparatus at the garage in 1933 in order to improve fire protection in East Freetown. The building was purchased outright in 1969 and converted into a fire station. An addition was built in 1989 to add an additional apparatus bay as well as a training area. Station 2 is an unstaffed “call” station and is manned on an as-needed basis by off-duty and on-call firefighters. Station 2 houses two engines, one ladder truck, one ambulance, one brush breaker, and one marine unit.

Station 2 Fleet

Engine 2 is a 2024 KME Severe Service pumper. Engine 2 is the primary firefighting vehicle out of Station 2 and responds first to all fire and rescue calls in East Freetown. Engine 2 is equipped with a Hale 1500 gallon per minute pump and a 1,000 gallon water tank. Engine 2 also carries the Jaws of Life and various medical equipment for motor vehicle accidents.

Engine 4 is a 1997 International/KME pumper that was previously assigned to Engine 2. Engine 4 serves as the department’s reserve pumper and is used when one of the primary units goes out of service for repairs or maintenance. Engine 4 is equipped with a Hale 1,250 gallon per minute pump and a 1,000 gallon water tank.

Breaker 2 is a 1976 AM General M35A2 6×6 brush breaker. It is a former military cargo truck that was acquired for no cost through federal excess property and converted into a firefighting vehicle by department members at very little expense to the town. It was placed in service in 1999. Breaker 2 is first due for all brush fires in town. It is equipped with a Hale 300 gallon per minute pump and a 750 gallon water tank. Built specifically for off-road use, its unique design allows it to access areas that typical firefighting vehicles cannot.

Breaker 3 is a 2004 Stewart and Stevenson LMTV 1078 (Light medium tactical vehicle) obtained through the Federal Excess Property program. Like Breaker 2, it was transformed into a firefighting vehicle by dedicated department members. After hundreds of hours of volunteer work—including welding, fabrication, wiring, and painting—Breaker 3 was officially placed in service in November 2024.

Ladder 2 is a 1989 Pierce Arrow 105’ aerial which was purchased used in 2018. This unit is a very important piece of equipment for the safety of our firefighters as it provides a stable working platform when performing rooftop operations. It also helps to lower the town’s insurance rates.

Tanker 2 is a 2014 Kenworth/Fouts 2,000 gallon with a 500 GPM pump. With our limited hydrant coverage this vehicle is vital to providing the initial water supply at fires.

Marine 2 is an 1974 18’ Mako Center console which we acquired from the Berkley Fire Department in 2023 Marine 2 is docked on Long pond during boating season.

Squad 2 is a 2016 F250. This truck serves as an additional general utility vehicle for the department. Squad 2 also used for special details and to tow department boats and trailers.

Station 3 “Central”

Station 3 is located at 25 Bullock Road in East Freetown and serves as the department’s headquarters and administrative offices. Station 3 is the town’s newest fire station and was opened on 1/1/2000. It is slated for an addition and renovation to begin in the summer of 2024 Its centralized location allows for a quick response to all areas of town. Station 3 is manned 24/7 by an on-duty crew of three Firefighters. On Weekdays an additional paramedic is added to the “day shift” Station 3 houses one engine, one ambulance, Squad and 2 command staff vehicles.

Engine 3 is a 2014 KME Predator Panther pumper. Engine 3 is the town’s primary pumping apparatus and is first due to all fire related calls in town. It is the department’s busiest firefighting vehicle. Engine 3 is equipped with a Hale 1,250 gallon per minute pump and a 1,000 gallon water tank. It features dual hydraulic racks for easy access to ground ladders and drafting equipment. Engine 3 is equipped with a thermal imaging camera as well as specialized Rapid Intervention Team equipment to help rescue trapped firefighters.

Rescue 3 is a 2022 F550 Lifeline Superliner Type I Ambulance. Rescue 3 is a fully licensed and equipped Advanced Life Support ambulance and is the town’s primary EMS vehicle. Rescue 3 responds first due to all medical-related calls in town and is the department’s busiest and most frequently used vehicle.

Rescue 2 is a 2019 F-550 lifeline Superliner that was previously assigned to Rescue 3. Rescue 2 is a fully licensed and equipped Advanced Life Support ambulance and is the town’s secondary EMS vehicle. Rescue 2 responds to all medical-related calls when Rescue 3 is unavailable or when a second ambulance is needed. It also serves as a backup unit when Rescue 3 goes out of service for repairs or maintenance.

Squad 3 is a 2024 F350. Which serves as the Shift commanders vehicle as well as general utility vehicle. It is the primary Tow vehicle for the Departments trailers.

UTV 3 is a 2022 Polaris Ranger equipped with EMS /rescue skid unit. This is used for remote rescue in the Freetown Fall River Bioreserve as well as planned events where a small mobile unit is beneficial.

UTV 2 is a 2024 Polaris Ranger equipped with EMS /rescue skid unit. This is also used for remote rescues.

Remote Rescue Trailer is a 2024 Summit RED Wagon. This rescue trailer is utilized in conjunction with UTVs for remote access.

Car 2 is a 2018 Tahoe ( Former Car 1) assigned to The Deputy Chief who is the department Fire Prevention officer. It serves as the Deputy’s command vehicle and is equipped as a rapid response unit with a monitor/defibrillator, emergency medical supplies, 4 gas meter, thermal imaging camera, incident command accessories, Air Pak and multiple radios.

Car 1 is a 2023 F150 Responder assigned to the Fire Chief. It serves as the Chief’s command vehicle and is equipped as a rapid response unit with a monitor/defibrillator, emergency medical supplies, 4 gas meter, thermal imaging camera, incident command accessories, Air Pak and multiple radios. Car 1 can act as a mobile command post for extended duration incidents and is also equipped to tow department boats and trailers.
