Barn Fire on Locust Street – Multi-Agency Response
Just before 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 8th, a resident at 19 Locust Street reported a barn fire on their property. A full department response was immediately issued, with Station 3 being staffed by the duty crew of three firefighters.
While en route, the officer of Engine 3 was informed by police that a large barn at the rear of the residence was fully involved, with heavy fire showing. In response, the Lieutenant ordered a working fire assignment and requested additional tankers to the scene.
Upon arrival, Engine 3 encountered heavy fire conditions, further intensified by high winds. The crew, along with the first mutual aid engine from Berkley, prioritized protecting the residence from flying embers while working to contain the fire in the barn.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Berkley, Lakeville, Dartmouth District 3, Rochester, Westport, and Dighton. Dighton also provided station coverage and responded to several calls while local crews were engaged in firefighting efforts. Additionally, the Freetown Highway Department assisted with overhaul operations using a backhoe.
All large animals were able to escape the barn safely; however, several rabbits, ducks, and chickens unfortunately perished in the fire.
Fire crews remained on scene until 10:20 PM. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
